Borrowing a car

Can I lend my car to someone?

Yes, provided they have your permission and valid insurance for the car. The owner still has a few things worth checking personally.

01

Ask for proof, not reassurance

See the driver’s certificate or temporary policy and check the registration number, driver’s name and cover dates. A screenshot of a quotation is not proof that a policy was bought. If the cover has only just started, the Motor Insurance Database may not update immediately, so the certificate remains important.

02

Check the licence and planned use

Make sure the borrower holds the right licence and tell them about any vehicle restrictions. Ask where they are going, who will drive and whether the trip involves work. Cover for social use may not extend to business journeys, deliveries or hire and reward.

03

Your responsibilities do not disappear

Lending the car does not excuse an unsafe vehicle. Tyres, lights, brakes and other roadworthiness matters still need attention. The car must normally be taxed and have a valid MOT where required.

04

Protect the relationship as well as the car

Agree who pays the excess, fuel, tolls, parking charges and any cleaning or recovery costs. Explain any faults or unusual controls. If you would be unable to cope with the car being damaged or unavailable, it may be better not to lend it.
