Cover the complete trip
Include the collection and return journeys, not just the nights away. Leave room for delays. If two people may drive, arrange cover for both rather than deciding informally during the trip.

Do not overload the car
Check the handbook for load limits and tyre pressures. Keep luggage below the top of the rear seats unless a secure load guard is fitted. Heavy items should be low and restrained, not loose where they can move under braking.

Children, pets and equipment
Make sure child seats are suitable and properly fitted. Secure pets and roof loads correctly. Towing, roof boxes and specialist sporting equipment may bring extra policy or vehicle restrictions, so ask before travelling.

Breakdowns away from home
Find out whether breakdown cover follows the car, the owner or neither. Keep the provider’s number and location information handy. Ask the owner about the spare key and what they want you to do if the car cannot be driven.
